Energy sold off hard; palladium jumped 10.39% as gold slipped

Energy finished lower across the printed complex, Brent down 4.82% and WTI 2.83%, with natural gas off 4.59% and heating oil 1.92%. Precious metals diverged as gold eased 0.14% while palladium surged 10.39%, silver rose 2.61% and platinum 3.44%; copper advanced 1.09%. Soybean oil and meal posted firm gains, sugar and cotton weakened, and livestock split with feeders lower and hogs higher.

WTI fell 2.83% to 83.9 $/bbl and 6.52% on the week, Brent 4.82% to 88.24 $/bbl, heating oil 1.92% to 4.186 $/gal and natural gas 4.59% to 2.7 $/MMBtu as Venezuela considers leaving OPEC in a blow to the oil cartel, with managed-money WTI net 84020 (−3459), Brent 7126 (+290), RBOB 79652 (+5571), heating oil 16641 (+758) and natural gas −71673 (+28407).

Brent Crude Oil added to a heavily short net long.

Precious Metals were firmer, 3 of 4 higher.

Gold eased 0.14% to 4562.75 $/oz, dipping to the lowest in a week as Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech pushed markets to reprice the Fed rate outlook, while silver rose 2.61% to 70.26 $/oz, platinum 3.44% to 1883.95 and palladium 10.39% to 1443.9; managed-money gold net 144747 (+3099), silver 14073 (+2378), platinum 10228 (+3014) and palladium −5499 (−182).

Gold added to a extended net long; Palladium added to a heavily short net short.
