German producer prices rose 1.8 percent year-over-year, easing from 2.2 percent and pointing to cooling factory-gate pressures. The ZEW Economic Sentiment Index jumped to 26.3, beating consensus of 18 and signaling stronger analyst optimism on the German outlook. German GfK consumer confidence fell to -29.6 against expectations of -28.5, underscoring persistent household caution.
Spanish trade balance widened to a deficit of 8.24 billion euros, reflecting softer export performance. French business confidence held at 101 while Dutch consumer confidence improved to -35.0. Equity markets sold off with the DAX declining 1.82 percent and CAC 40 falling 1.64 percent.
The German 10-year Bund yield eased to 2.97 percent amid the risk-off tone. Brent crude fell 0.91 percent to 99.77 dollars per barrel while EUR/USD slipped 0.21 percent to 1.14.
Flash PMIs from France and Germany will arrive this evening and set the tone for growth perceptions. French composite, manufacturing and services readings are expected at consensus levels around 47.5 to 51. German manufacturing PMI is projected at 50.5 while the composite and services prints sit near 49.8 and 49.0 respectively.
Traders will parse any divergence between the two largest economies for clues on euro-area momentum. Italian GDP advance estimates and unemployment data follow later in the week and could influence ECB thinking on the growth-inflation balance. No Governing Council speakers are scheduled.
Softer German producer prices and resilient ZEW readings suggest the euro-area economy is stabilizing but lacks broad-based strength. Persistent services inflation keeps the 2.80 percent headline CPI above the ECB target and complicates the path to further easing. Member states show clear divergence, with German sentiment improving faster than French or Spanish indicators.
Capital Markets Union discussions continue in the background but have yet to affect near-term market pricing. The committee will discuss raising banks’ minimum reserves in coming meetings as part of balance-sheet normalization.

Brent crude fell 0.91 percent to 99.77 dollars per barrel, limiting imported inflation risks for the euro area. EUR/USD slipped 0.21 percent to 1.14 while EUR/JPY rose 0.20 percent to 186.48, reflecting mixed dollar and yen flows. U.S.
data and Middle East supply signals continue to shape global risk sentiment and euro crosses. European equities tracked Wall Street lower after the ECB decision, with banks and autos leading the decline. Gold eased 0.22 percent, indicating reduced safe-haven demand.
Broader emerging-market currency moves had limited direct spillovers into euro-area assets.
The Governing Council voted to keep the deposit rate at 2.25 percent and signaled that a September hike remains possible if inflation reaccelerates. Lagarde noted the economy improved slightly in the second quarter yet stressed vigilance on services prices and wage trends. Markets now price a lower probability of near-term cuts, with the terminal rate path shifting higher after the hawkish hold.
Forward guidance continues to emphasize data dependence rather than a preset easing trajectory. Bund yields and EUR crosses adjusted lower on the day as investors reassessed the September meeting odds.
