Yesterday's Recap

German ZEW Economic Sentiment Index rose to 34.2 from 26.3, exceeding the 30 consensus and lifting growth expectations for Europe’s largest economy. Spanish trade balance improved to -7.69 billion euros from -8.24 billion. Dutch unemployment rate edged up to 4.0% from 3.8%, while consumer confidence improved to -34.0 from -35.0.

German producer prices increased 3.0% year-over-year, exceeding the 2.7% consensus forecast. Equity markets closed lower with the DAX down 0.42% to 25,983.04 and CAC 40 off 0.57% to 8,453.09. The euro strengthened across crosses as EUR/GBP fell 0.17% and EUR/JPY rose 0.55%.

Bund yields declined sharply, reflecting demand for German debt amid mixed regional data. Low river levels flagged by the Bundesbank added downside risk to third-quarter industrial output.

The Day Ahead

Flash PMI releases dominate today’s calendar for Germany and France. German manufacturing PMI is expected at 52.0 after 52.2 prior, while services PMI forecasts stand at 50.1 versus 49.8. French business confidence and composite PMI prints are also due, with services expected at 49.8.

Markets will scrutinize any downside surprises that could raise odds of further ECB easing. No Governing Council speakers are scheduled. The data will shape expectations ahead of next week’s eurozone aggregates.

French and German prints together will clarify whether the recent ZEW improvement is broadening or remains isolated to sentiment indicators.

Other Economic Notes

Bundesbank warned that low river levels are constraining industrial activity and slowing Germany’s third-quarter recovery. Eurozone current account surplus reached 35.1 billion euros in June, exceeding forecasts and underscoring external strength. French fiscal risks drew attention as the Inspection générale des Finances highlighted potential defense and agricultural spending shortfalls without a 2027 budget.

Bond investors shifted toward Italian debt over French paper ahead of elections, compressing Italian spreads. ↓ p.2

Other Economic Notes (continued)

These developments reinforce divergent fiscal and structural pressures across member states. Eurozone unemployment at 6.30% and CPI at 2.90% continue to anchor policy expectations.

Global Macro News

Gold advanced 1.86% to 4,600.50 as investors sought safe-haven assets amid European political uncertainty. Bitcoin surged 8.82% to 75,376.04 following US Treasury debt buyback announcements that lifted risk sentiment globally. Brent crude eased 0.31% to 93.49 on softer inventory data.

Hawkish ECB rhetoric supported the euro even as the US dollar remained firm on higher Treasury yields. Broader European sovereign debt markets flashed warning signs as spreads widened on fiscal concerns in France and Italy. These global flows reinforced demand for Bunds and lifted EUR crosses despite regional equity weakness.

ECB Watch

The deposit rate stands at 2.25%. Recent communications underscore a hawkish tilt, with markets pricing only modest further cuts by year-end. Eurozone CPI at 2.90% and unemployment at 6.30% leave the Governing Council comfortable holding policy steady near current levels.

Staff projections continue to emphasize persistent services inflation, reducing the likelihood of aggressive easing. TPI and PEPP reinvestments remain on autopilot without announced adjustments. Markets now assign lower probability to a December cut after the German ZEW beat, keeping Bund yields anchored and supporting the euro.
