June’s inflation dip was driven largely by lower fuel prices, though analysts caution the trend may reverse once energy costs rebound following the collapse of the US-Iran ceasefire. A recent study estimated the June heatwave reduced UK output by more than £1 billion. Business rates relief announced for pubs, clubs and music venues aims to support hospitality, yet broader fiscal pressures remain elevated.
Nomura highlighted that persistent core CPI resilience could complicate the Bank of England’s rate path even as headline inflation moderates. Major UK banks have contacted 146,000 vulnerable customers facing high energy costs.

US trade negotiators reaffirmed tariff intentions ahead of expiring global duties, raising external risks for UK exporters. Russia lowered its targets for September Duma election turnout and United Russia’s vote share amid domestic pressures. Germany and Nigeria agreed to expand trade ties as Berlin seeks deeper African commercial links.
Citi discussed economic cooperation with Vietnam’s ambassador in Washington. Australian officials dismissed near-term gas tax proposals despite renewed Iran-US tensions. Brent crude rose 2.10% to 96.05, supporting UK energy revenues but adding to imported inflation risks.
The Bank of England’s 3.73% Bank Rate remains on hold as the committee assesses June’s 2.6% CPI print against its 2% target. Recent communications indicate officials view the inflation decline as encouraging yet temporary given energy price volatility. Core CPI stability at 2.6% has prompted Nomura to warn that rate cuts may be delayed relative to earlier market pricing.
Forward guidance continues to stress data dependence, with the committee voting to maintain the current stance at the last meeting. Quantitative tightening proceeds at the scheduled pace, supporting the 5.02% 10-year gilt yield level observed earlier in the week. Markets now price a modestly slower easing trajectory through year-end.
