Yesterday's Recap

Indonesia dominated regional news flow as markets welcomed policy continuity signals following the nomination of Destry Damayanti as the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia. The rupiah held steady near 17,831 per dollar with a modest 0.18% gain while the JCI index climbed 1.59% to 6,401.89 on improved sentiment after Prabowo’s address on the 2027 budget targets. Thailand attracted attention with real investment reaching 535 billion baht in the first half, led by AI and clean-energy projects.

Malaysia’s strong fundamentals continued to underpin the ringgit near 4.08 per dollar after Bank Negara projected 5% growth for the year. Singapore’s STI edged 0.41% higher to 5,743.59 while Brent crude rose 1.67% to 88.52 on supply concerns. Gold advanced 1.69% to 4,437.30 as safe-haven demand lifted the metal.

Overall ASEAN FX showed limited volatility with USD/THB easing 0.24% to 33.09. Thailand’s investment surge in AI and clean energy highlights ongoing supply-chain relocation from China into ASEAN manufacturing hubs. Malaysia’s 5% growth forecast from Bank Negara reflects resilient domestic demand and electronics exports that rose 9% YoY in July.

Indonesia’s bullion banks now manage 153 tons of gold worth $20 billion, adding depth to local financial markets.

The Day Ahead

Thailand releases second-quarter GDP growth figures tonight with consensus forecasts showing a QoQ contraction of 0.6% and YoY expansion of only 1.7%, down from prior readings. Malaysia will publish July inflation data at midnight, following June’s 1.9% YoY print, with month-on-month expected near flat. Markets will monitor any early reaction to the Thai numbers for clues on Bank of Thailand policy.

Indonesia’s central bank rate decision is scheduled for 19 August with consensus pointing to a hold at 5.75%. Traders will also watch USD/IDR and USD/THB moves ahead of the releases for positioning clues. Regional bond yields remain in focus as capital-flow data from Malaysia and Thailand are digested.

Vietnam retains room to inject an additional 141 trillion VND into the economy while keeping rates supportive of growth. Broader ASEAN FDI inflows continue to benefit from US-China trade tensions, with electronics and semiconductor pledges rising across Vietnam and Malaysia.

Other Economic Notes

Thailand’s investment surge in AI and clean energy highlights ongoing supply-chain relocation from China into ASEAN manufacturing hubs. Malaysia’s 5% growth forecast from Bank Negara reflects resilient domestic demand and electronics exports that rose 9% YoY in July. Indonesia’s bullion banks now manage 153 tons of gold worth $20 billion, adding depth to local financial markets.

Vietnam retains room to inject an additional 141 trillion VND into the economy while keeping rates supportive of growth. Broader ASEAN FDI inflows continue to benefit from US-China trade tensions, with electronics and semiconductor pledges rising across Vietnam and Malaysia. Thailand reported a 12% y/y rise in tourist arrivals in July, though per-visitor spending stayed below pre-pandemic levels.

Overall ASEAN manufacturing PMI stayed in expansion territory, led by Vietnam and Malaysia.

Global Macro News

Safe-haven flows lifted the US dollar and gold prices, keeping mild pressure on several ASEAN currencies despite Indonesia’s relative outperformance. Brent crude’s 1.67% gain to 88.52 reflected OPEC+ supply discipline and geopolitical risk premia that could feed into regional inflation prints. Global equity sentiment remained cautious after softer US data, prompting selective rotation into commodity-linked ASEAN assets such as the JCI.

The dollar’s firm tone on safe-haven demand continues to test central banks’ tolerance for FX intervention, particularly in Indonesia and the Philippines. Gold’s advance to 4,437.30 underscores persistent hedging demand that may support Indonesia’s reserve management strategy. Broader risk appetite hinges on upcoming US policy signals that could influence capital flows into higher-yielding ASEAN assets.

Regional exporters remain sensitive to any further softening in China demand, already visible in Thailand’s tourism spending metrics.

ASEAN Central Banks Watch

Bank Indonesia’s leadership transition to Destry Damayanti is expected to preserve policy continuity, with the committee likely to hold the 5.75% BI Rate at the 19 August meeting while monitoring rupiah stability through measured intervention. The Bank of Thailand faces a soft GDP print that may reinforce its cautious stance on rates and prompt further non-bank lending oversight. Bank Negara Malaysia reiterated its 5% growth outlook, supporting a steady policy bias and allowing the ringgit to trade with an upside bias near 4.07-4.08.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is expected to maintain its 5.75% rate through year-end after July CPI exceeded the target midpoint. MAS will continue managing the Singapore dollar NEER band rather than adjusting interest rates, focusing on imported inflation containment. State Bank of Vietnam retains policy space for liquidity injection of up to 141 trillion VND while keeping rates accommodative to sustain manufacturing FDI inflows.
