Yesterday's Recap

Brazil GDP expanded 0.5% quarter-over-quarter in the latest reading, exceeding the 0.4% consensus and slowing from the prior 1.1% gain. Year-over-year growth reached 2.0%, above the 1.8% expected. Industrial production rebounded 0.2% month-over-month after a 1.8% drop.

Equity markets responded positively, with the Bovespa index climbing 3.05% to 185,205. The real strengthened, sending USD/BRL down 1.16% to 5.09 and EUR/BRL 0.96% lower. Vale shares advanced 4.03% and Petrobras rose 2.61% on firmer commodity prices.

Domestic demand contracted sharply even as headline growth surprised to the upside, while farm output surged 6.8% yet producers reported margin pressure from costs. High real interest rates continued to weigh on broader investment, leaving the external sector as the main growth driver.

The Day Ahead

S&P Global Services PMI is scheduled for release at 05:00 ET today, following last month’s 49.7 print. Markets will watch for any further signs of service-sector contraction amid elevated borrowing costs. Trade balance data arrives tomorrow at 10:00 ET, with the consensus calling for a $7.14 billion surplus versus the prior $7.07 billion.

Analysts expect continued strength in agricultural exports to support the external accounts. No monetary policy announcements are due this week, leaving focus on incoming activity indicators and any revisions to growth expectations.

Other Economic Notes

High real interest rates continue to restrain capital spending, leaving investment as the weakest component of demand. The combination of firm commodity exports and subdued domestic absorption has produced a growth profile heavily tilted toward the external sector. Fiscal sustainability concerns persist as revenue gains from stronger GDP may prove temporary if the domestic slowdown deepens.

Policymakers face the challenge of sustaining the inflation-targeting framework while activity data remain mixed and investment shows limited signs of recovery.

Global Macro News

WTI crude held near $91.14 with a modest 0.14% gain, supporting Brazil’s oil export revenues. Gold advanced 2.65% to $4,482.10, reflecting safe-haven demand that can lift Brazilian mining equities. ↓ p.2

Global Macro News (continued)

Bitcoin rose 0.63% to $77,790.29, providing limited spillover to risk assets. Reports of potential U.S. tariff adjustments on Brazilian beef imports introduced uncertainty for agricultural trade flows.

Broader emerging-market sentiment improved on the back of firmer commodity prices, aiding BRL performance. Global rate differentials remain wide, keeping carry-trade interest in Brazilian short-term paper elevated despite domestic growth concerns.

BCB Watch

The Selic rate stands at 14.00% following the most recent COPOM decision to hold. The committee’s forward guidance continues to stress data dependence and commitment to the inflation target. Recent communications have highlighted the need to keep policy restrictive until inflation expectations converge convincingly.

Markets interpret the steady rate path as consistent with a cautious approach given mixed activity signals and still-elevated inflation readings. Any shift toward easing would require clearer evidence of sustained demand weakness and anchored expectations. The current stance supports real appreciation while limiting the scope for rapid cuts.
