Equity markets across Emerging Europe closed lower amid heightened geopolitical tensions and reduced risk appetite. The BIST 100 fell 1.90% to 13,981.10 while the iShares Poland ETF declined 0.71% to 40.35. Polish and Hungarian 10-year government yields dropped sharply, falling 4.01% and 6.90% respectively, reflecting safe-haven demand.
The zloty and forint both weakened 0.24% against the euro, with EUR/PLN reaching 4.34 and EUR/HUF at 362.60. Turkey’s lira slipped 0.15% versus the dollar to 47.17. News flow highlighted Poland’s formation of a 10-country EU coalition to slow ETS tightening and the AI-driven export gains for Polish and Hungarian manufacturers.
Hungary’s Kopint-Tárki maintained its 2% 2026 GDP forecast despite soft first-quarter data. Brent crude rose 2.88% to 90.64, adding to imported-energy price pressures.
Markets will focus on the MNB’s rate decision at 04:00 ET, with consensus pointing to a 25bp cut to 5.75% from 6.00%. Turkey releases business and consumer confidence indices at 23:00 ET, followed by Poland’s headline unemployment rate at 23:30 ET, expected to edge down to 5.8% from 5.9%. The CBRT is scheduled to announce its policy rate at 03:00 ET on 23 July.
Brent crude’s 2.88% advance to 90.64 may add to imported-energy price pressures across the region. No major Czech or Romanian data are due. Gold held steady at 4,013.60 while Bitcoin fell 1.18% to 64,032.
Poland continues to attract attention as long-term forecasts suggest its economy could surpass the UK and France in size within two decades, supported by AI-related export growth. Hungary’s office market shows attractive entry points for investors relative to Western European capitals despite domestic growth concerns. Romania and the Czech Republic remain quiet on the data front, with attention turning to euro-convergence metrics.
Energy import dependence continues to expose all five economies to Brent price swings. EU fund flows and ETS reform negotiations remain key medium-term drivers for Poland and Hungary. The forint and zloty face ongoing pressure from external risk sentiment.

The ECB deposit rate stands at 2.25% while Eurozone CPI reached 2.80% YoY and unemployment held at 6.20%. These figures set the external anchor for NBP, CNB and MNB policy discussions. Brent’s advance above 90 raises imported inflation risks for energy-dependent CEE economies.
Global risk-off sentiment linked to Middle East developments weighed on regional equities and supported core bond markets. The CNB and MNB remain most sensitive to any ECB signals given their open economies and trade linkages. Broader dollar strength kept pressure on TRY and, to a lesser extent, PLN and HUF.
The MNB is expected to deliver a 25bp cut tomorrow, continuing its gradual easing path while monitoring forint stability. The NBP is likely to stay on hold given still-elevated Polish inflation and the need to preserve zloty credibility ahead of potential euro-adoption talks. The CNB faces similar constraints and is expected to align closely with ECB moves.
The BNR maintains a cautious stance, balancing disinflation progress against external vulnerabilities. Turkey’s CBRT operates under distinct political constraints and is anticipated to hold its 37% policy rate to defend the lira and anchor inflation expectations. Policy divergence remains stark between the four EU members and Turkey, with convergence criteria for euro adoption continuing to shape NBP, CNB and MNB communications.
