Yesterday's Recap

Polish assets faced pressure as the zloty fell to its weakest level in nearly three years against the euro, with EUR/PLN reaching 4.40. The iShares Poland ETF declined 1.41% to 43.50, reflecting investor caution toward Polish risk assets amid reports of central bank tensions. Hungary’s forint also softened, pushing EUR/HUF to 366.85.

The Czech koruna posted a modest loss with EUR/CZK at 24.35. In Turkey, the BIST 100 rose 0.31% to 11,152 while USD/TRY held near 49.78. Brent crude’s 5.34% drop to 109.63 offered some relief to energy importers across the region.

No major data releases occurred in any of the five markets on 26 October. Poland-Germany commercial ties advanced with joint competitiveness initiatives that could support medium-term supply-chain integration, while drought-related crop losses subtracted several billion dollars from Polish GDP, underscoring agricultural exposure. Regional equity flows remained selective amid mixed global risk sentiment.

The Day Ahead

Turkey’s headline unemployment rate for September is scheduled for release at 03:00 ET, providing an update on labor-market conditions. The final balance-of-trade figure for the same month follows at the same time, with consensus near minus 5.23 billion USD. Poland’s preliminary October CPI reading arrives on 30 October and will set the tone for NBP policy expectations.

Markets will also monitor any follow-through from yesterday’s Polish-German economic cooperation announcements. Regional equity flows may respond to global risk sentiment ahead of the CNB’s next decision window. Qobuz’s launch of its music streaming service highlights Poland’s expanding consumer economy and digital infrastructure, offering a positive counterpoint to recent market volatility.

Other Economic Notes

Poland’s drought-related crop losses are subtracting several billion dollars from GDP this year, highlighting agricultural vulnerability. Closer Poland-Germany commercial ties could support medium-term investment and supply-chain integration. Turkey continues to post structurally higher inflation than its EU peers, keeping CBRT policy under distinct constraints.

Energy-price volatility remains a shared exposure for all five economies given high import dependence. EU fund disbursements continue to anchor fiscal outlooks in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. ↓ p.2

Other Economic Notes (continued)

The zloty’s three-year low tests external financing conditions, while Hungary and Czech inflation readings from IMF data show continued disinflation at 1.54% and 2.51% respectively.

Global Macro News

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave rates unchanged at its late-October meeting, supporting a cautious tone for emerging-market currencies. Global equity sentiment stayed mixed as Bitcoin and gold both eased modestly. Stronger US growth readings have raised fresh inflation concerns that could delay rate cuts into 2026.

The Bank of Japan is projected to hold policy steady while maintaining a hawkish bias. Apollo’s planned stake in Mubadala Capital underscores continued Gulf interest in alternative assets. Currency weakness in the Philippines and Nigeria illustrates broader EM pressure that can spill into CEE flows.

Oil’s sharp decline eases imported inflation risks for Turkey and the CEE-4 but may weigh on regional energy exporters.

Emerging Europe Central Banks Watch

NBP has kept its policy rate at 3.75% since the 5 March 2026 decision, with recent zloty weakness testing the credibility of its inflation-targeting framework. CNB last moved on 18 June 2026 when it set the rate at 3.75%; the committee voted to hold at the 17 September meeting and next convenes on 5 November. MNB met on 20 October but has not published a verified rate level since the prior confirmation window.

Continuation

Emerging Europe Central Banks Watch (continued)

BNR maintains its policy rate at 6.50%, consistent with Romania’s slower disinflation path. CBRT operates under tighter political oversight, limiting convergence with the more ECB-responsive CNB and MNB. Policy divergence remains wide, with the Czech and Polish rates aligned while Hungary and Romania sit higher and Turkey follows a separate trajectory.

Poland’s August CPI at 3.21% and the pending October print will guide NBP reaction to the currency move.
