Spanish manufacturing PMI rose to 50.2, topping the 50.0 expected, but Italian manufacturing PMI slipped to 51.3 from 52.2. Spanish unemployment increased by 19,500 in July against expectations of a decline.
French industrial production rose 0.1% m/m, below the 0.3% consensus. Spanish services PMI climbed sharply to 58.3 from 54.2, and Italian services PMI advanced to 52.5. German factory orders posted a strong 3.1% m/m gain versus the 0.3% forecast.
Equity markets closed mixed with the DAX down 0.29% and CAC 40 up 0.03%, while EUR/USD gained 0.15% to 1.16 and gold rose 1.89% to 4,325.90. The data mix showed resilient German industrial demand offsetting softer consumption and mixed services readings across the periphery.
Italian industrial production for June is due at midnight, followed by the French unemployment rate at 21:30 ET. Germany releases its June trade balance, exports and industrial production at 22:00 ET. The German trade balance print carries high market impact and could influence Bund yields and EUR crosses if it deviates from the 17.4 billion euro consensus.
No ECB speeches are scheduled. Traders will watch for signs of sustained German industrial momentum against softening French labour data. Markets will also monitor any revisions to export figures that could alter the near-term growth outlook for the bloc’s largest economy.
Extreme drought has lowered Rhine and Danube water levels, disrupting freight and energy supply chains across Germany, France and the Netherlands. EU finance ministers discussed easing fiscal rules to accommodate higher defence spending, with Germany indicating openness. Eurozone CPI stood at 2.90% y/y in July and unemployment at 6.30% in June, keeping the ECB deposit rate at 2.25%.
These figures underscore persistent price pressures amid slowing labour-market momentum. Climate-related supply risks add to downside growth concerns for the second half of 2026. <i>↓ p.2</i>

The combination of transport bottlenecks and steady inflation leaves policymakers with limited room to ease further without risking a reacceleration in prices.
US non-farm payrolls beat expectations, supporting the dollar and capping euro gains. Middle East tensions eased, lifting global equities and reducing safe-haven demand for Bunds. Brent crude held near 79.40 dollars per barrel after OPEC+ supply concerns.
Gold advanced to 4,325.90 as investors hedged against geopolitical and climate risks. Asian equity rallies provided a supportive backdrop for European risk assets. Drought-driven river disruptions in Europe echo similar freight constraints reported in China, raising global supply-chain inflation risks.
Markets now price only a modest ECB easing path through year-end.
With the deposit rate steady at 2.25%, the ECB continues to emphasise data dependence amid 2.90% July inflation. Recent staff projections highlighted upside risks from energy prices and supply bottlenecks caused by low river levels. Governing Council members have reiterated that quantitative tightening via PEPP and APP runoff will proceed at the announced pace without adjustments to TPI parameters.
Forward guidance remains focused on achieving a timely return to the 2% target while monitoring wage and services price developments. Markets currently price limited further cuts by December, consistent with the committee’s assessment that policy is approaching neutral territory.
