Equity markets delivered mixed results, with the DAX advancing 0.53% to 26,440.31 while the Euro Stoxx 50 declined 0.09% to 6,539.59 and the CAC 40 fell 0.16%. The German 10Y Bund yield settled at 2.97%, down 2.51% on the day yet still near a 15-year high.
EUR/USD edged 0.02% higher to 1.16. Wildfires spread across Germany, Spain, Italy and Greece, prompting evacuations and infrastructure damage that weighed on regional sentiment. News that leading economies face the highest borrowing costs since the 2008 crisis added pressure on French and German yields.
Brent crude rose 0.42% to 91.25 while gold climbed 0.76% to 4,451.30, reflecting safe-haven demand. Bitcoin advanced 2.13% to 64,158.61. EUR/JPY rose 0.26% to 184.76.
The German 2Y Bund showed no quoted level amid thin trading.
Attention turns to Germany’s ZEW Economic Sentiment Index at 05:00 ET, with consensus pointing to a rise from 26.3. Spain releases its Trade Balance at 04:00 ET. On 20 August the Netherlands publishes its Unemployment Rate.
Germany’s Producer Price Index follows on 20 August. Flash PMI prints for France and Germany on 21 August will cover manufacturing, services and composite readings, with German manufacturing expected near 52.0. France’s Business Confidence and Consumer Confidence figures round out the near-term calendar.
The Netherlands also releases Consumer Confidence on 21 August. No events are scheduled for 19 August.
Eurozone CPI YoY stood at 2.90% in July while unemployment held at 6.30% in June, leaving the ECB Deposit Rate at 2.25%. Persistent wildfire damage in Germany, France and Italy threatens to lift near-term inflation through supply disruptions and reconstruction costs. Higher sovereign yields across the bloc are tightening financial conditions even as the ECB maintains its current policy stance.

The Bank of Canada and ECB are co-hosting a conference on diversity in central banking. India is finalising a $9 billion submarine contract with Germany, underscoring continued trade ties despite political risks. Broader equity markets showed resilience, with EUR/JPY up 0.26% to 184.76.
EUR/GBP rose 0.05% to 0.85. German authorities seized dinghies in raids targeting smuggling networks.
An ECB blog post warned that an AI equity bubble could burst and precipitate a sharp market correction with spillover effects for euro-area banks and credit conditions. President Lagarde stated she is not a candidate for French president yet reaffirmed her commitment to advancing EU integration. The Governing Council left the Deposit Rate unchanged at 2.25%.
