Yesterday's Recap

German IFO Business Climate Level climbed to 88.8 on 25 August, exceeding the 87.2 consensus and lifting the DAX 0.66% to 26,278.51. French Consumer Confidence Index held steady at 86, matching the previous print but missing the 87 forecast and leaving the CAC 40 down 0.16% at 8,439.20. Euro Stoxx 50 edged 0.12% higher to 6,455.63 amid the mixed equity performance.

EUR/USD remained unchanged at 1.17 while EUR/GBP eased 0.01% to 0.86. The German 10-year Bund yield declined 2.51% to 2.97%, reflecting modest duration buying after the IFO beat. Brent crude fell 3.09% to 85.84, easing imported energy cost pressures for the bloc.

No major policy speeches from ECB officials were reported during the session. Gold rose 1.21% to 4,694.20 as investors sought safe-haven assets amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

The Day Ahead

German GfK Consumer Confidence is scheduled for release on 27 August with expectations unchanged at -29.6. French preliminary inflation data on 28 August will provide the first August reading after July’s 2.1% year-over-year pace. Spanish inflation prints the same day, with consensus pointing to a 4.2% year-over-year rate versus 3.6% previously.

German unemployment figures and Italian business and consumer confidence surveys also appear on 28 August. Markets will monitor any follow-up comments from ECB Governing Council members ahead of the September policy meeting. Energy price volatility remains a key variable for the inflation prints.

German unemployed persons data and Spanish business confidence will further clarify labor-market and corporate trends across the bloc.

Other Economic Notes

Eurozone CPI stood at 2.90% year-over-year in July while unemployment held at 6.30% in June, keeping the ECB on a data-dependent path. German business sentiment improvement contrasts with still-soft French household readings, highlighting uneven momentum across core economies. Elevated energy costs and depleted gas inventories continue to threaten the disinflation trajectory.

Other Economic Notes (continued)

Political developments in Germany, including the potential for AfD influence in state governments, add a layer of policy uncertainty. Broader capital-market reforms discussed in India and elsewhere have limited direct bearing on Eurozone flows at present. Volkswagen’s planned job cuts of up to 100,000 positions underscore structural challenges facing German industry.

Global Macro News

Markets are pricing a more hawkish ECB response as geopolitical tensions and energy risks keep inflation risks tilted to the upside. Dollar-based stablecoins are raising concerns among central banks about monetary sovereignty, a theme relevant for euro-area policymakers. The Bank of Canada’s upcoming interest-rate decision and joint conference on diversity in central banking underscore coordinated global policy scrutiny.

UK support for Ukrainian long-range missile production adds to European defense spending considerations that could influence fiscal space. French and Saudi plans for large theme-park investments near Paris represent rare foreign direct investment inflows but will not alter near-term macro data. Global equity sentiment remains supported by gold’s 1.21% gain to 4,694.20, reflecting ongoing safe-haven demand.

ECB Watch

The ECB Deposit Rate remains at 2.25%. President Lagarde’s panel remarks at the World Economic Forum stressed the need to monitor global growth and energy developments before adjusting policy. Markets are increasingly embedding expectations of a less dovish stance given persistent energy-price pressures that could keep Eurozone CPI above target longer.

Quantitative tightening via PEPP reinvestments continues without announced changes, while the Transmission Protection Instrument remains available but unused. Staff projections continue to condition rate decisions on incoming inflation and wage data rather than calendar guidance. The committee voted to hold rates at the most recent meeting, with no vote split disclosed in official communications.
