Yesterday's Recap

The Netherlands Consumer Confidence Index rose to -33.0 in September from -34.0, marking a slight improvement in household sentiment. Equity markets diverged, with the Euro Stoxx 50 advancing 1.31 percent to 6,318.20 while the DAX fell 1.60 percent to 25,304.06 amid election setbacks for Chancellor Merz’s CDU. The CAC 40 gained 0.92 percent to 8,138.94.

No other Eurozone data prints were released and no ECB speakers appeared. The Bundesbank noted inflation is likely to remain elevated while growth has slowed, citing loss of momentum linked to the Iran conflict and low water levels.

The Day Ahead

Spain will publish its August trade balance at midnight. France releases S&P Global flash composite, manufacturing and services PMIs at 23:15, with manufacturing expected at 50.8 and services at 48.4. Germany follows at 23:30 with its own flash manufacturing PMI, consensus 54.0, plus composite and services readings.

These prints carry direct weight for euro-area composite indicators and will inform ECB staff growth assessments. Tomorrow’s schedule includes French business and consumer confidence figures plus Germany’s IFO business climate and GfK consumer confidence. Broader euro-area unemployment stood at 6.40 percent in July, providing a stable labour-market backdrop despite regional divergences.

Other Economic Notes

The Bundesbank warned that German inflation will stay elevated while growth has lost momentum, citing the Iran conflict and low water levels on inland waterways. France faces the euro area’s largest fiscal deficit in 2026, with public debt projected to reach its highest share of GDP since 1978. Goldman Sachs noted that DAX performance has historically decoupled from domestic political risk, limiting downside from the current crisis.

Chancellor Merz pledged to continue an unpopular economic overhaul despite the rout and described opposing forces as destructive. No new EU-wide fiscal or policy announcements were reported.

Global Macro News

Europe’s gas-price surge is feeding additional inflation pressures that the ECB now expects to persist longer than previously projected. The Eurosystem launched the Pontes platform to settle tokenised assets in central bank money, marking a step toward modernising wholesale payments infrastructure. French President Macron urged the European Commission to delay new methane rules by one year to ease energy costs.

Global equity sentiment remained supported by risk-on flows into Bitcoin despite softer commodity prices. EUR crosses showed limited reaction to the mixed German political signals, reflecting the currency’s broader sensitivity to ECB policy differentials versus the Federal Reserve. Energy-security cooperation between France and Gulf states could influence future LNG supply dynamics for the euro area.

ECB Watch

The ECB Deposit Rate remains at 2.50 percent. Governing Council member Stournaras emphasised that the bank must avoid rushed policy moves given persistent energy-driven inflation risks. The central bank announced it will invest part of its own funds in tokenised securities settled via the new Pontes system, signalling readiness to integrate distributed-ledger technology.

Recent staff analysis highlighted that a fresh energy shock will keep euro-area inflation above target for longer, tempering expectations for near-term easing. The committee voted to hold. Markets continue to monitor PEPP reinvestment flexibility and any updates to forward guidance on quantitative tightening.
