French YoY inflation reached 3.0% versus the 2.8% expected, and Italian YoY inflation climbed to 4.2% against a 3.8% consensus. German retail sales rose 1.3% MoM, slightly below the 1.5% forecast, and fell 0.4% YoY. Italian business confidence improved to 91.9 while consumer confidence dropped to 91.2. Spanish business confidence rose to -1.6.

The Day Ahead

Spain will release unemployment level change data today. Italy is scheduled to publish retail sales MoM figures. No major Eurozone releases are listed for tomorrow.

Markets will monitor any follow-through from recent French budget announcements and ongoing diesel stock discussions involving France and Germany. Traders will also track reactions to higher peripheral inflation prints that may influence near-term ECB expectations, especially after the verified Eurozone CPI YoY reading of 3.20% for August and unemployment at 6.40%.

Global Macro News

The US reportedly threatened France and Germany with diesel export bans unless strategic stocks are released to ease fuel prices ahead of midterms. European economies face pressure from higher energy costs while the US appears more resilient. Oil prices remained elevated near $102 per barrel, adding to input cost concerns for Eurozone manufacturers.

Global equity sentiment stayed cautious amid mixed US data and geopolitical tensions. Bitcoin rose 3.67% while gold gained 0.25%, reflecting safe-haven flows. EUR crosses showed modest weakness against the dollar and sterling.

Broader market focus remains on whether peripheral inflation surprises will alter rate-cut expectations outside the Eurozone.

ECB Watch

Bundesbank President Nagel stated that ECB bond purchases target price stability rather than yield spreads, signaling reluctance to intervene in French or Italian debt markets despite widening spreads. The ECB Deposit Rate stands at 2.50%. Eurozone CPI YoY reached 3.20% in August while unemployment held at 6.40%.

Lagarde requested activation of the replacement process for Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel. Recent staff projections and forward guidance continue to emphasize data dependence on inflation, with hotter prints in France, Italy and Spain likely keeping easing expectations in check. Markets priced limited near-term policy shifts given the focus on inflation over spread stabilization.
