German Ifo Business Climate printed at 90.2 for October, modestly above the 90.0 consensus and the prior 89.9, offering a rare upside surprise for the bloc's largest economy. French consumer confidence, however, plunged to 80 from 85, missing consensus and marking the weakest reading since 2013 as fiscal anxieties deepened. Spain's headline unemployment rate rose to 10.18% from 9.87%, exceeding the 9.9% consensus.
Markets nonetheless shrugged off the mixed data: the Euro Stoxx 50 gained 0.79% to 6,164.69, the DAX rose 0.71% to 25,590.77 and the CAC 40 added 0.51% to 7,887.14. Bunds rallied modestly, with the German 2-year yield easing 2 bp to 3.06% and the 10-year down 1 bp to 3.39%. EUR/USD slipped 0.44% to 1.11 as traders positioned ahead of the Fed decision.
Germany's GFK Consumer Confidence Index for November is due at 03:00 ET, with consensus at -31 versus the prior -30.6. France releases unemployment benefit claims at 07:00 ET, following a prior decline of 61,300. Later in the week, Italy's headline unemployment rate is scheduled for Thursday at 05:00 ET, with consensus holding at 6.2%, alongside Italian business and consumer confidence and Spanish business confidence.
Friday brings the heavy hitters: French Q3 GDP preliminary (consensus +0.1% q/q) and French preliminary October CPI (consensus 3.2% y/y), plus Spain's Q3 GDP flash estimate (consensus +0.6% q/q). These releases will shape expectations heading into Thursday's ECB decision.
The ECB's bank lending survey continues to flag deteriorating credit conditions, with eurozone mortgage demand suffering its sharpest setback in three years as higher rates bite. France's heavy reliance on foreign investors in its sovereign debt market is drawing scrutiny as a potential source of volatility, though contagion risk appears less virulent than in prior eurozone crises. Moody's affirmation of France's sovereign rating provided temporary relief, with the French 10-year yield retaking levels below 5%.
Paris's finance minister has stressed the need to "cure ourselves" without additional spending, signaling fiscal consolidation ahead. German economy minister Reiche's praise of Poland as a "success story" underscores Berlin's shifting regional economic framing.

French political noise around education reform and minimum-wage top-ups adds domestic distraction as fiscal worries mount.
The ECB holds its deposit rate at 2.50%, set at the September 10 decision, with the next Governing Council meeting tomorrow, October 29. Eurozone CPI stands at 3.80% year-over-year as of September, still well above target, keeping the committee cautious about declaring victory. The bank lending survey's signal of tightening credit conditions and slumping mortgage demand argues against further aggressive tightening.
Succession intrigue is building, with the eurozone extending the deadline for bids to replace board member Schnabel — a process now overshadowed by the French bond rout. ↓ p.3
Markets will parse tomorrow's statement for any shift in forward guidance, particularly whether the Council acknowledges softening credit dynamics. With French fiscal risk simmering, the ECB's TPI remains a backstop markets are watching closely, though no activation is imminent.
