• Fitch holds Saudi Arabia at 'A+' with stable outlook amid slower growth

Yesterday's Recap

Saudi Arabia reported a 34% surge in point-of-sale transactions early in July, driven by freight activity and signalling resilient consumer spending. The UAE lifted crude production to an all-time high of 4.1 million barrels per day in June, according to IEA data, underscoring Abu Dhabi's response to stronger Asian demand. Saudi equity markets closed mixed, with Aramco falling 0.45% to 26.72 while MSCI Saudi rose 0.19% to 37.25.

MSCI UAE advanced 0.62% to 19.47 and the DFM General Index finished at 6,042.55. MSCI Qatar slipped 0.47% to 17.74, while MSCI Kuwait edged 0.08% higher to 36.56. Brent crude settled at 76.01 dollars per barrel, down 0.38%, and WTI fell 0.93% to 71.41.

Gold closed at 4,104.10, down 0.64%. All GCC currency pegs remained steady, with USD/SAR at 3.75 and USD/AED at 3.67. Cross-border trade between the UAE and Saudi Arabia faced reported delays amid tensions.

Fitch maintained Saudi Arabia's 'A+' rating with a stable outlook but flagged slower growth amid regional war challenges. Qatar's plans to restart full LNG output face delays after an Iranian attack on a vessel left passage through the Strait of Hormuz uncertain.

The Day Ahead

The GCC calendar stays quiet through the weekend with no major data releases scheduled for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain. Markets will track Brent and WTI price action closely given its direct impact on fiscal revenues across all six economies. OPEC+ compliance and any signals ahead of the August ministerial meeting remain in focus.

Regional equity turnover is expected to stay light, with attention on Aramco and real-estate names in Dubai. Sovereign CDS spreads are likely to hold steady absent fresh geopolitical developments. Shipping risk premia could rise if Hormuz uncertainty persists.

Other Economic Notes

Saudi Arabia's non-oil private sector continues to expand, supported by Vision 2030 project spending and improving domestic demand. Fiscal discipline remains a key anchor for long-term sustainability, as highlighted by recent Barclays commentary. UAE diversification efforts benefit from record oil receipts that provide additional headroom for non-hydrocarbon investment.

Broader GCC economies continue to benefit from stable energy prices that underpin current-account surpluses and FX reserve accumulation. ↓ p.2

Global Macro News

Oil prices remain the dominant macro driver for GCC fiscal balances and external accounts. Brent near 76 dollars supports comfortable budget positions for Saudi Arabia and the UAE while still capping upside for higher-cost producers. Global risk sentiment stayed cautious amid mixed equity flows and a stronger gold price at 4,104 dollars per ounce.

US Treasury yields and the dollar index continue to set the external financing backdrop for GCC issuers. Asian demand for Gulf crude and LNG remains firm, providing a counterweight to softer European growth readings. Any escalation in Red Sea or Hormuz shipping risks would quickly lift regional risk premia.

GCC Central Banks Watch

All six GCC central banks maintained policy rates unchanged, preserving alignment with the Federal Reserve's current stance. SAMA and CBUAE kept benchmark rates at 5.00% and 5.15% respectively, with SAIBOR and EIBOR showing minimal movement. QCB, CBK, CBO and CBB likewise held steady, reflecting the USD peg constraint shared by five members.

Kuwait's dinar basket peg continues to deliver slightly lower effective rates than pure-USD peers. FX reserve coverage remains ample across the region, with Saudi and UAE buffers well above three years of imports. No divergence in policy direction has emerged among the six central banks.
