Mainland Chinese equities closed nearly flat with Shanghai Composite at 3,927.18 and CSI 300 at 4,665.88 as investors positioned ahead of tonight’s July activity releases. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1.10% to 25,116.85 amid profit-taking in property names and lingering tariff concerns, while Taiwan’s TAIEX slipped 0.46% to 45,811.01. The yuan strengthened modestly with USD/CNY closing at 6.73, supported by PBoC fixing operations and fading Fed hike expectations.
Copper rose 0.31% to 6.61 on stimulus hopes while Brent crude gained 1.67% to 88.52. Gold advanced 1.69% to 4,437.30 as a risk hedge. No major data prints occurred on 15 August across Greater China economies.
Tonight’s China July House Price Index, Industrial Production, Retail Sales and Fixed Asset Investment figures will provide the latest read on domestic demand and property momentum. Consensus points to Industrial Production slowing to 5.0% y/y from 5.3% while Retail Sales are expected to rise 1.5% y/y. Fixed Asset Investment is forecast to contract further at -6.2% y/y.
Markets will also monitor any State Council signals on infrastructure support. The August Loan Prime Rate decisions are scheduled for Wednesday, with both 1Y and 5Y rates expected to remain unchanged at 3.0% and 3.5%. HKMA and CBC calendars are quiet.
China’s property sector continues to weigh on sentiment as prices keep declining in tier-two cities and fixed-asset investment remains soft. Beijing’s approval of additional special-purpose bonds for infrastructure offers partial offset but has yet to lift broader activity. Taiwan’s semiconductor exports remain a bright spot, confirming resilient external demand and supporting the island’s growth outlook.
Cross-strait trade flows show no material disruption. Hong Kong’s peg mechanics remain stable with the aggregate balance steady and no intervention required.
Soft US CPI readings have reduced near-term Fed hike odds, supporting the yuan’s recent appreciation to a 3.5-year high. MUFG notes that tonight’s China activity data will influence both USD/CNY and broader Asian FX as the PBoC manages fixing pressure. ↓ p.2

Societe Generale highlights that PBoC’s steady stance continues to underpin gradual yuan appreciation. Global commodity moves, including higher copper and Brent, reflect China stimulus expectations. Japan’s potential for faster BOJ normalization and yen intervention adds to regional FX volatility.
UK expansion and Canadian dollar strength illustrate divergent global growth paths that indirectly affect Greater China capital flows.
The PBoC is expected to keep policy accommodative with no change to the Loan Prime Rates on Wednesday as July data are anticipated to show further softening. Liquidity operations and RRR signals from the State Council remain the primary tools for supporting credit growth. HKMA faces no pressure on the USD/HKD peg, which closed at 7.85 with the aggregate balance stable and no intervention recorded.
The CBC maintains its steady policy stance, supported by strong semiconductor export performance that bolsters Taiwan’s external position. No rate decision is scheduled for the CBC in the near term. PBoC fixing operations continue to guide the yuan toward modest appreciation without aggressive intervention.
