• Current account deficit expanded to $3.1 billion in Q1FY27 amid elevated oil prices.
 • RBI interventions kept USD/INR near 95.59 while tightening liquidity through swap operations.

Yesterday's Recap

Equity benchmarks closed modestly lower with Nifty 50 at 24,366.00, down 0.12 percent, and Sensex at 78,009.25, off 0.09 percent. The rupee traded at 95.59 against the dollar after a 0.15 percent daily gain, supported by RBI spot and forward sales that limited further depreciation. Brent crude rose 2.88 percent to $91.07 per barrel, adding pressure on the external accounts.

News confirmed India’s goods trade gap reached its widest level since January while the current account shortfall hit $3.1 billion in the first quarter of FY27. Short-term rates stayed at 5.50 percent with no change in the policy corridor. Consumer-durable stocks outperformed as broader indices pared early losses.

Heavy RBI foreign-exchange activity revived market focus on the central bank’s managed-float approach.

The Day Ahead

Markets will monitor the HSBC flash PMI prints scheduled for release after market hours on 20 August. The manufacturing, services and composite readings are expected to show whether the 53–54 range seen in prior months has been sustained. No major domestic data releases are listed for 18 August.

Traders will also track oil-price movements and any further RBI liquidity operations ahead of the weekend. Equity sentiment may hinge on global risk appetite and rupee stability near 95.60.

Other Economic Notes

India’s external position remains under pressure from higher import values linked to Middle East developments. Reports indicate the economy requires faster real GDP growth and a stronger currency trajectory to reach the $20 trillion target by 2036. The central bank’s inflation-targeting framework continues to draw regional attention as a model for balancing price stability with growth.

Merchandise export momentum has yet to offset the import surge, keeping the trade balance in focus for policymakers.

Global Macro News

Elevated Brent prices at $91.07 are feeding directly into India’s import bill and widening both trade and current-account gaps. ↓ p.2

Global Macro News (continued)

Global equity markets showed mixed moves, with safe-haven demand supporting gold at $4,482.70. The dollar index remained firm, prompting continued RBI spot intervention to cap rupee losses. Regional peers in South Asia are watching India’s liquidity-tightening steps for spillover effects on cross-border trade and investment flows.

A 14-member CII delegation is in Dhaka this week to discuss expanded trade and investment links. Broader emerging-market sentiment will influence foreign-portfolio flows into Indian equities in the coming sessions.

RBI Watch

The Reserve Bank has advanced the deadline for certain USD/INR swap operations, tightening domestic liquidity conditions and supporting the rupee near 95.50–95.60. Recent statements from RBI officials underscore the priority of containing imported inflation while maintaining orderly market conditions. With the repo rate at 5.25 percent and CPI at 4.38 percent year-on-year, the central bank retains room to respond to external shocks without immediate policy-rate changes.

Forward guidance continues to emphasize data-dependent calibration rather than pre-committed easing. Market participants interpret the stepped-up foreign-exchange sales as a signal that the RBI will tolerate only limited rupee volatility. Liquidity management tools are being deployed to offset the impact of intervention on banking-system reserves.
