Yesterday's Recap

Equity markets advanced as the Nikkei 225 gained 0.93 percent to close at 68,946.98. The yen traded little changed, with USD/JPY finishing at 159.44, EUR/JPY at 183.91 and GBP/JPY at 215.09. Japan 2-year yields edged up half a basis point to 1.651 percent while the 10-year rose 1.7 basis points to 2.873 percent.

No major data releases occurred on August 12. News flow centered on July wholesale prices remaining hot, reinforcing expectations for policy tightening. Goldman Sachs highlighted that Japan retains ample reserves for additional yen-buying operations.

Brent crude fell 2.48 percent to 86.77 amid softer global demand signals. Gold eased 0.86 percent to 4,370.80 while Bitcoin held steady near 63,489.

The Day Ahead

Attention turns to Sunday’s preliminary GDP release at 15:50 ET. Quarter-over-quarter growth is expected at 0.5 percent while the annualized reading is forecast at 2.0 percent. Markets will parse the figures for signs of sustained momentum ahead of the next policy meeting.

No other domestic indicators are scheduled through the weekend. Traders will also monitor any follow-up comments from officials on intervention readiness. Equity futures point to a cautious open on Monday.

Broader focus remains on how the data may influence the Bank of Japan’s assessment of underlying demand strength.

Other Economic Notes

Elevated wholesale inflation broadens price pressures across the supply chain and supports the case for further normalization. Yen intervention capacity remains substantial given official reserves near one trillion dollars. Corporate investment in semiconductors continues to scale, with the TSMC-Sony venture in Kumamoto adding to cumulative outlays exceeding six trillion yen.

Risk aversion among Japanese firms continues to slow adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies such as AI. These trends together shape a gradual recovery path that still leaves room for monetary policy adjustment. Persistent upstream costs also keep attention on how quickly they may feed into consumer prices.

Global Macro News

Asian equities rose after U.S. inflation data matched expectations and reduced September Fed easing bets. Oil prices held near 80 dollars a barrel despite the Washington standoff and Japanese diplomatic efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

Ukraine’s shortage of ballistic-missile interceptors underscored ongoing geopolitical supply risks that indirectly affect energy markets. Putin’s visit to the disputed Kuril Islands drew sharp Japanese condemnation and added diplomatic friction. Broader risk sentiment stayed supported as Bitcoin held above 63,000.

These cross-currents keep external pressure on the yen and Japanese yields contained for now.

BoJ Watch

With the policy rate at 1.00 percent, the Bank of Japan continues to signal gradual normalization. July wholesale inflation data released Thursday kept September tightening expectations alive by showing persistent upstream price pressures. The committee voted to hold at the last meeting, citing the need for more evidence on underlying demand.

Officials have reiterated that any further rate path will depend on incoming growth and price readings rather than preset calendars. Recent Summary of Opinions notes also flagged vigilance on yen volatility and its pass-through to inflation. Markets now price a higher probability of a 25-basis-point move next month should GDP and subsequent CPI prints remain firm.

Yield-curve control adjustments remain on hold while 10-year JGB yields sit at 2.87 percent.
