Yesterday's Recap

South Korea’s Q2 GDP beat triggered fresh won buying and shifted market pricing toward earlier Bank of Korea tightening. Consumer confidence data printed without a consensus figure, leaving the print’s impact muted. Equities sold off sharply, with KOSPI declining 5.72 percent to 6,690.62 and KOSDAQ falling 5.32 percent to 748.22.

Samsung Electronics dropped 7.59 percent to 249,500 won while SK Hynix fell 8.34 percent to 1,759,000 won. The won gained 0.56 percent against the dollar, closing at 1,465.79, supported by SK Hynix dollar sales and official guidance for exporters to convert foreign-exchange receipts. Korea’s short-term rate held at 2.54 percent while the long-term rate rose 2.60 percent to 4.18 percent.

Brent crude’s 9.59 percent decline offered some relief on the import bill but failed to lift risk assets.

The Day Ahead

Markets will monitor Wednesday’s Business Confidence Index, last reported at 79, for signs of sustained manufacturing momentum. Friday’s Exports Year-over-Year release, previously 70.9 percent, will test whether semiconductor shipments continue to offset weakness elsewhere. No Bank of Korea speakers are scheduled, keeping focus on incoming data rather than fresh guidance.

Traders will also track oil-price volatility and any FOMC-related comments that could influence USD/KRW flows. The absence of major domestic releases leaves the won’s direction dependent on external risk sentiment and exporter conversion flows.

Other Economic Notes

Authorities seized 7.2 trillion won in illegal foreign-exchange transactions during the first half, underscoring tighter enforcement. Fuel-price caps were frozen to cushion household inflation pressures even as CPI YoY stood at 3.16 percent. Reports highlight “growth without jobs” as chip profits surge while employment gains lag.

Foreign-exchange reserves absorbed a net 28 billion dollar sale by authorities, illustrating efforts to manage volatility without derailing the won’s recent recovery. These measures reinforce a policy mix that prioritizes external stability alongside domestic price control.

Global Macro News

China’s CXMT memory-chip IPO raised about 12 billion dollars and surged nearly 500 percent on debut, intensifying competition for Korean semiconductor exporters. Global oil prices fell sharply, easing import costs for Korea but pressuring energy-related revenues. U.S.

tech earnings supported broader risk appetite yet failed to prevent the KOSPI selloff. The won decoupled from yen moves, rising on domestic dollar inflows rather than regional carry dynamics. FX and bond markets now focus on oil volatility and the upcoming FOMC meeting, with the won viewed as likely to trade in the mid- to upper-1,400 range.

Stablecoin settlement tests by Coupang and Woori Bank signal gradual digital-payment innovation without immediate monetary-policy implications.

BoK Watch

The Bank of Korea maintained its base rate at 2.54 percent as of June, with CPI YoY at 3.16 percent leaving real rates negative. Recent GDP strength and sustained capital inflows have prompted markets to price a higher probability of rate hikes rather than cuts. The committee continues to stress data dependence, balancing inflation moderation against financial-stability risks from rapid won appreciation.

Minutes and speeches underscore that any policy shift will hinge on export durability and employment trends rather than isolated GDP prints. The firmer won and steeper long-term yields are consistent with markets anticipating a less accommodative stance ahead.
