Yesterday's Recap

Korean equities fell sharply on August 18 with KOSPI closing at 6,869.83, down 1.55 percent, while KOSDAQ dropped 3.52 percent to 834.20. Samsung Electronics declined 7.82 percent to 247,500 won and SK Hynix fell 9.75 percent to 1,500,000 won after heavy semiconductor selling. The KRX activated a sell-side sidecar on KOSPI to curb volatility during the session.

USD/KRW fell 1.97 percent to 1,386.86, pushing the won past the 1,400 level for the first time in eleven months. Korea’s short-term rate held at 2.54 percent while the long-term rate rose 2.60 percent to 4.18 percent. July CPI printed 2.79 percent year-over-year, slightly softer than expected and reinforcing subdued inflation pressures.

Export-Import Bank of Korea announced a 100 million won donation for Colombia earthquake relief, a minor item amid the market focus on currency strength.

The Day Ahead

Today’s domestic calendar remains empty of scheduled data releases or Bank of Korea events. Market attention will center on any follow-through in USD/KRW after the won’s break below 1,400 and on semiconductor order flow that could influence Samsung and SK Hynix. Global cues from Brent crude at 91.47 dollars and gold at 4,581.70 dollars may shape risk sentiment for Korean exporters.

Traders will also monitor whether the recent KDI 3.2 percent GDP forecast alters expectations for external demand. No MPC minutes or speeches are due, leaving the August 28 policy meeting as the next clear focal point.

Other Economic Notes

KDI raised its 2026 GDP growth projection to 3.2 percent, citing the AI-driven semiconductor boom as the main driver above the government’s 3 percent target. Authorities plan to raise bank deposit insurance fees by 910 billion won annually to strengthen the safety net. The government is also exploring a new financial hub outside Seoul to reduce capital concentration.

Export growth remained robust in July, led by chips and ships, supporting the broader recovery narrative. These developments underscore Korea’s reliance on technology exports while highlighting efforts to manage financial-sector resilience.

Global Macro News

Global risk assets showed mixed moves with Bitcoin rising 7.40 percent to 69,468.75 while equities in Seoul lagged. Gold gained 4.94 percent to 4,581.70 dollars, reflecting safe-haven demand amid currency volatility. Brent crude edged up 0.49 percent to 91.47 dollars, offering modest support for Korean energy importers.

ING noted that Korea’s growth-driven recovery provides a policy lesson for managing external surpluses. Barclays warned that won strength could weigh on both GDP and GDI growth through reduced export competitiveness. These global factors reinforce the won’s recent appreciation against the dollar despite domestic equity weakness.

BoK Watch

The Bank of Korea faces a more complex policy setting after the won’s rapid strengthening past 1,400, which reduces imported inflation but pressures exporters. July CPI at 2.79 percent year-over-year aligns with the target range and lowers near-term inflation expectations. Markets now assign lower odds to near-term rate hikes given the currency move and soft price data.

The committee voted to hold at its last meeting, with forward guidance emphasizing data dependence on growth and financial stability. Won appreciation complicates the trade-off between supporting export-led growth and maintaining price stability. Officials have not signaled imminent easing, keeping the base case for no change at the August 28 MPC.

Long-term yields rising to 4.18 percent reflect some repricing of future policy paths amid the stronger currency.
