BRC Retail Sales Monitor printed 1.7% y/y against a 2.9% consensus and 3.4% prior, confirming softer consumer spending. BoE Deputy Governor Pill and Governor Bailey both spoke, reiterating that subdued expansion remains the dominant domestic issue. FTSE 100 closed at 10,519.25, up 0.20%, while the FTSE 250 added 0.11%.
GBP/USD rose 0.53% to 1.34 and GBP/EUR eased 0.04%. The 10-year gilt yield climbed 2.51% to 4.94%, lifting the curve even as Brent crude advanced 0.70% to 85.32. UK natural gas edged 0.24% higher.
Markets absorbed the weak sales print without shifting BoE rate expectations materially. UK unemployment stands at 4.90% and CPI at 2.80% y/y, leaving the BoE Bank Rate at 3.73% with limited immediate pressure to adjust.
UK GDP month-over-month, the three-month average, goods trade balance and industrial production figures are all due at 22:00 ET. Consensus calls for a modest 0.1% GDP rebound after the prior -0.1% print, with industrial production expected to fall 0.1%. A downside surprise would reinforce the BoE’s growth concerns and support further gilt-curve flattening.
Trade data will show whether the non-EU deficit narrowed from -13.05 billion. Sterling crosses and front-end gilts will react first to any deviation from consensus. Markets also monitor US data for secondary effects on global yields.
Housing and PMI releases later this month will test whether the recent services slowdown persists.
Chancellor Reeves is expected to tighten fiscal rules in November, which could constrain spending and reinforce the low-growth narrative. Persistent weakness in domestic demand keeps downside risks to the BoE’s growth forecasts in focus. UK 10Y Gilt Yield stands at 4.87% as of 10 July.
The softer consumer spending data aligns with the BoE’s emphasis on subdued expansion as the dominant domestic challenge, keeping markets focused on whether upcoming GDP and industrial production prints will prompt any shift in forward guidance.

US June CPI eased to 3.5% y/y from 4.2%, driven by lower petrol prices and supporting the view that global disinflation remains intact. Oil prices rose on supply concerns linked to Iran tensions, lifting Brent to 85.32 and prompting traders to increase bets on BoE and ECB policy paths. The Bank of Japan minutes revealed a clash over negative rates before the vote, adding volatility to yen crosses that indirectly affect sterling.
Australian lamb import reviews by the US Trade Commission highlight ongoing protectionist risks for UK exporters. Broader equity sentiment stayed supported by US retail sales strength, though gold fell 0.69% to 4,033.10 on reduced safe-haven demand. These moves keep external conditions mixed for UK assets.
Governor Bailey told Andy Burnham that low economic growth constitutes the UK’s “big issue” and warned that an AI bubble correction could shrink output by up to 2.2%. He also flagged risks to financial stability from Iran-related conflict. At Mansion House, Bailey opened the door to simplifying the financial rulebook, signalling a potential easing of regulatory burden.
Markets continue to price limited near-term easing while monitoring whether the growth warnings translate into more dovish forward guidance at the August meeting.
